HILO, Hawaii – University of Hawaii at Hilo Baseball Coach Kallen Miyataki got the game he's been waiting for in a 7-5 Pacific West Conference win over Azusa Pacific University in Wong Stadium.
An opportunistic offense, a steady defense and a pitching gem in relief gave the Vulcans the final game of the four-game conference series.
The Cougars (7-10 overall, 3-1 PacWest) took the early 3-0 lead on Cam Bennett's bases-clearing second-inning double. The Vulcans (3-7, 2-6) came right back with a pair in their half on Edison Sakata‘s RBI single and a wild pitch
After Steven Garrett added a Cougar run on a fly out, two more bases runners got aboard on a single and walk. David Moody entered the game at that point for the Vulcans and held the Cougars to a run on six hits and a walk while he struck out four.
The Vulcans knotted the score in the third on Nate Green‘s sacrifice fly and Sean Nearhoof‘s RBI single. They then added a run on Jacob Grijalva‘s grounder in the fourth and Sakata's fly out in the fifth. The Cougars posted a run in the sixth but Grijalva got it back with an RBI single in the seventh.
Garrett opened the ninth with a single to put the tying run at the plate. Justin Gomez drove the ball up the middle but Jaron Manago made a diving snag of the shot and tossed it to Sakata for the force at second, then went to first to end the threat. Manago fielded the final grounder to end the game.
Phillip Steering had a 3-for-4 night at the plate while Grijalva and Green paired hits.
Morgan West went 2.2 innings giving up four runs on seven hits with three walks to start the game for the Vulcans.
Michael Staudinger was 3-for-5 to pace the Cougars while Adrian Tovalin, Pablo O'Connor and Garrett paired hits. Seven Cougars saw action on the mound with Michael Shawtaking the loss.
The Vulcans next host Point Loma Nazarene University in noon doubleheaders at Wong Stadium on Friday and Saturday, March 11 and 12
