SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The University of Hawaii at Hilo's tour of the Bay Area ended with today's 11-4 loss to San Francisco State University in an NCAA Division II West Region match-up on Maloney Field.
Michael Jenkerson led the Vulcans (7-31) with three of the team's nine hits.
Making his sixth start of the season, Jordan Kumasaka held the Gators to four runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five before giving the mound to Cole Nakachi (0-1) in the fifth. Nakachi took the loss giving up three runs on three hits
Six Gators (19-20) had multiple hits in the game with Ryan Burke going 4-for-4 with 3 RBI. Adding to the Gators 17-hit performance was Logan Marston with three hits, and Conor Fraser, Bryce Brooks, Nick Jackson and Andrew Breen with two hits each.
Matthew Hernandez (3-4) picked up the win in relief holding the Vulcans to three hits over 3.1 innings while striking out three.
The Vulcans got on the board early with a 4-run second inning. After two outs, Sean Nearhoof took a ball four to get the ball rolling. Edwin Standberry doubled to put both runners in scoring position. Back-to-back singles by Edison Sakata and Jenkerson put the Vulcans up 2-0. Kyle Yamada followed with a 2-run double.
Through four innings Kumasaka held the Gators to four hits and Marston's fourth-inning RBI double. The Gators opened the fifth with three hits before Nakachi entered the game for the Vulcans to take the bite out of the Gators. After a grounder, the Gators came back with three hits to cap the 6-run, 6-hit inning.
The Gators would go on to score two runs in the sixth and seventh to take the game.
The Vulcans return to Hilo for season-ending doubleheaders with Hawaii Pacific University on Saturday and Sunday, April 30 and May 1. Game times are 3 p.m. and noon, respectively.
