SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – The University of Hawaii at Hilo faced one of the PacWest's scoring machines and came away with an 85-54 loss to Dominican University.
“Dominican has been scoring a lot points all year and, unfortunately, we weren't as sharp defensively as we have been,” UH Hilo Head Coach David Kaneshiro said. “We moved the ball and shot really well in the first half and gave ourselves a chance. We were okay in the second half but didn't shoot as well.
“We've shown a lot of heart all year and looking forward to bouncing back on Thursday.”
The Vulcans trailed 41-37 at the half hitting 14-of-34 shots from the field which included five 3-pointers. In the second half, they hit just 7-of-27 shots with a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws for 17 second half points.
Felicia Kolb had a career high 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field and hitting 3-of-4 shots from the free throw line. She also grabbed six rebounds, five on the offensive side.Lauren Hong also tallied 15 points with a 6-of-10 shots finding the net including three 3-pointers.
The Vulcans (5-12, overall, 5-7 PacWest) connected on 34.4 percent of their shots going 21-for-61 from the field with six 3-pointers and only six free throws.
The Penguins (14-6, 10-3), who average 81.8 points per game, were led by Carly Holboke‘s 22 points and nine rebounds. She was 8-of-14 from the field with for 3-pointers and a pair of free throws. Allyssa Weatherd added 16 points while Sandra Ikeora had 15.
The Penguins hit 47.7 percent of their shots from the field converting 31-of-65 shots with seven 3-pointers. They were also 16-of-20 at the free throw line.
The Vulcans head to Fresno for a 5:30 p.m. game with Fresno Pacific University on Thursday, February 4.
