SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – The University of Hawaii at Hilo continues to shake up the bottom half of the PacWest Championship bracket after knocking Dominican University out of the sixth spot with an 86-76 victory.
The Vulcans led most of the game and at times build double-digit leads in both periods. The Penguin made a run and held the lead for the final 1:37 of the first half and first 1:25 of the second half. Parker Farris then capped a 6-0 run that gave the Vulcans a lead they wouldn't relinquish
Farris and Salim Gloyd pulled off another inside/outside offense with Vandyon Lockett doing his best to keep the defense off of the duo. On the inside, Gloyd amassed 25 points and pulled in 11 rebounds. The senior forward was 8-of-12 from the field and went to the free throw line 12 times hitting eight. He also tallied a 3-pointer. On the outside, Farris hit 6-of-10 3-point attempts and finished with 23 points. Lockett kept the ball moving and finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists. He was 6-of-10 from the field with a 3-pointer and 5-of-7 at the free throw line.
The Vulcans (5-12 overall, 5-8 PacWest) hit 27-of-51 shots for a 52.9 percent shooting percentage and hit 9-of-18 3-point attempts. They were also 23-of-32 at the free throw line.
Josh Ramirez led the Penguins with 16 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field with a pair of free throws. Matt Hayes added 13 points, Christopher Schwartz-Edminson had 12 andSeth Turner 10.
The Penguins (11-9, 7-6) hit 29-of-64 shots with 10 3-pointers and were 8-of-9 at the free throw line.
The Vulcans are next in Fresno to play a 7:30 p.m. game with Fresno Pacific University on Thursday, February 4.
