HILO, Hawaii – The University of Hawaii at Hilo continued their solid play at home with a 74-64 victory over Notre Dame de Namur University in PacWest men's basketball play in the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
“Down the stretch we made some plays to the best of our ability and made free throws,” UH Hilo Head Coach GE Coleman said. “The biggest thing was we got three or four important stops that allowed us to get to the free throw line and score.”
The Vulcans built and maintained a five-point margin through most of the game before Andrew English‘s jumper gave the Argonauts a 59-57 lead with 5:40 on the clock.
Vandyon Lockett‘s jumper jump started a 9-0 run that put the game out of reach. After Lockett tied the game, Salim Gloyd hit a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer. Nate Walker‘s lay-up capped the run. The Vulcans would go on to hit 8-of-10 free throws to end the game.
Jalen Young led the Argonauts (3-21 overall, 2-15 PacWest) with 26 points on 9-of-19 shooting from the field with a 3-pointer. Korey Serrna added 13 points.
The Argonauts hit 24-of-50 (48%) shots from the field with five 3-pointers and 11 free throws.
Gloyd had a game-high 31 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field with three 3-pointers and an 8-for-8 performance at the free throw line. Randan Berinobis recorded his first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Vulcans (7-14, 7-10) hit 25-of-53 (47.2%) of their shots from the field with four 3-pointers and 20 free throws.
