HILO, Hawaii – After a slow start, the University of Hawaii at Hilo got on track to beat Notre Dame de Namur University 70-59 in a PacWest women's basketball game in the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
The Vulcans (9-12 overall, 9-7 PacWest) trailed 38-21 at halftime. They hit just 9-of-28 shots from the field with a pair of 3-pointers and a free throw.
“The second quarter we weren't very good defensively,” UH Hilo Head Coach David Kaneshiro said. “After half-time, they did a good job and picked up the energy on defense which helped the offense.”
The Vulcans went on a second half blitz outscoring the Argonauts 49-21. They nailed 17-of-25 (68%) from the field with six 3-pointers and hit 9-of-11 free throws.
Felicia Kolb led the Vulcans with 22 points and six rebounds on 9-of-13 shooting with a 3-pointer and three free throws. Kim Schmelz added 18 points aided by a 4-for-4 performance from 3-point range. Lauren Hong added 12 points.
The Vulcans had one of their best shooting nights going 26-of-53 (49.1%) from the field with eight 3-pointers and 10 free throws
Kirsten Liana led the Argonauts with 18 points and 11 rebounds on 6-of-17 shooting from the field with a 3-pointer and five free throws. Marinel Alcantara added 12 points.
The Argonauts were 18-of-55 (32.7%) from the field with seven 3-pointers and 16 free throws.
The Vulcans are back on the court on Thursday, February 18 when they host Brigham Young University-Hawaii in a 6 p.m. PacWest game in the civic auditorium
