A powerful earthquake shook the capitol of Chile Wednesday, and a tsunami alert was issued for the country's entire coast. The earthquake was reported at a preliminary magnitude of 8.3.

U.S. officials said the quake  was 4.8 miles below the surface and struck just offshore in the Pacific at 7:54 p.m. The quake was centered about 141 miles north-northwest of Santiago.

The National Weather Service has issued a Tsunami Watch for the state of Hawaii. If tsunami waves impact Hawaii, the estimated earliest arrival of the first tsunami wave is Thurs. Sept. 17 at 3:06am.
