Message from Occupy Hilo:
An explosion of global support for Mauna Kea’s protectors
Hollywood stars, renowned surfer, and Merrie Monarch halau hula join the effort.
Word of our Mauna Kea protection efforts spread across the planet over the weekend, fueled by worldwide media coverage and a tsunami of social media reporting.
The result has been an explosion of public support for our cause, including a flood of phone calls and e-mails to Governor David Ige, thousands of dollars in spontaneous donations from across the archipelago (and beyond), and hundreds more protectors flying in from all the islands to join us on the mountain. More than 4,000 people added their names to our petition to the governor and other public officials to immediately halt TMT’s desecration and the arrest of our people.
Over 1,000 people gathered Saturday on Mauna Kea to chant, sing, dance, hold ceremony and support one another and the mountain in aloha. Everyone feasted on food brought up in coolers by supporters, including fresh fish caught by Hawaiian fisherman who fried them up at our encampment.
Joining our effort were Hollywood actors Jason Momoa and Kala Alexander and world-renowned surfer Dustin Barca (who was among those arrested Thursday). These Native Hawaiian public figures are now helping us build worldwide public support and raise funds for our Mauna Kea protection efforts and legal appeals.
A number of halau hula (hula groups), on island for this week’s annual Merrie Monarch Festival, came up Sunday to pray, dance and make hoʻokupu (offerings) at our ahu kupuna (revered elders shrine) at Puʻu Huluhulu, located near the access road to Mauna Kea.
Some Public Officials have suggested that negotiations are going on during a 30 day rest period. To be clear no one has askd the Mauna Kea Hui of Protectors to take a 30 day rest period nor have we agreed to a rest period. We are not resting – we are continuing our stand for Mauna Kea — In Aloha we remain!
