Hurricane Guillermo continues to gain strength in the Eastern Pacific, heading toward the Hawaiian Islands. At 5am Friday morning, Guillermo was moving at 17 mph and located about 1,570 miles east-southeast of Hilo on the Big Island.

Guillermo is currently a Category 1 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds near 90mph, but the hurricane is forecasted to strengthen over the next few days, and could become a Category 3 over the weekend.

The weather over the Hawaiian Islands may vary greatly depending upon Guillermo's progression. It's still too early to forecast what the impacts may be.

Hurricane season is here, we urge you to view our Hurricane Protection Checklist and make sure your family and home are safe in the event of a hurricane on the Big Island.
