Papakolea, commonly called ‘Green Sands Beach’ is located near the southern tip of the island. Although this isn’t an easy beach to get to, it’s well worth the effort; just make sure to prepare for this 3 mile hike with plenty of water, food and sunscreen. This beach is well known for it’s glistening green sand. The source of the green coloration of the beach sands is due to the olivine crystals.
This beach is accessible in 3 ways. 1) Hiking. 2) Driving. Only 4-wheel vehicles with drivers who are very experienced in ‘off-road’ driving conditions. 3) Hitch a ride from one of the locals (expect a charge).
Once you arrive to the lookout of the beach, a 5-10 minute hike down steep conditions will take you to the beautiful, glistening green sand beach.
