KTA Waimea to host free community celebration on Saturday, August 6
Waimea (Kamuela), Hawaii Island – August 3, 2016 – Blue Zones Project® in North Hawaii today announced that KTA’s Waimea location is leading the way in improving the well-being of its customers and community by becoming the very first Blue Zones Project Approved™ grocery store in the state of Hawaii. KTA Waimea completed the certification process, which includes creating a Blue Zones® checkout lane, adding signage to highlight locally grown produce, encouraging parking at the farthest spaces from the store, selling healthy grab-and-go snacks, offering half sandwiches in the deli, distributing healthy recipes inspired by Blue Zones Project, and limiting sugar-sweetened beverages in checkout lanes.
A popular change for parents with young children is the Blue Zones Project checkout lane. Instead of being stocked with candy bars, gum and sweet treats that kids beg for — and that many adults may find hard to resist as well — the Blue Zones Project lane features a variety of healthy snacks, such as granola bars, nuts and fresh fruits.
“We understand and support the need to focus on the health and well-being of our friends and family in our community,” said Colin Miura, KTA Waimea General Manager, who spearheaded the effort to become Blue Zones Project Approved. “So much of our island lifestyle is centered on food and gathering with friends and family. What better place to learn more about Blue Zones Project than KTA, which has friends, family and food!”
KTA will be recognized for its outstanding achievement with a community celebration from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 6, at the Waimea store, 65-1158 Mamalahoa Highways in Waimea (Kamuela). The celebration is open to the public, and guests are welcome to enjoy live music by Chet Decambra, a cooking demo by Gayle Yogi of Saladmasters, and enjoy some “Move Naturally” and “Plant Slant” fun on the popular Blue Zones Project blender bike where riders can create tasty, healthy smoothies using some pedal power.
“People make hundreds of split second decisions when shopping for food for their families, so grocery stores are a very important venue for promoting health and well-being,” said Blue Zones Project, Hawaii Vice President Heidi Kim. “KTA Super Stores is a long time champion of health for the Hawaii Island community and we are thankful for their leadership in creating an environment where healthy choices are available and easily accessible. We are proud to celebrate KTA Waimea as the first Blue Zones Project Approved grocery store in the state, a milestone in Hawaii’s Blue Zones Project experience.”
